Corporate Events abroad; Ten80 Briefs

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The good thing about events in the recession is that it’s brought a real variety of work through the doo; we’ve got a real mix of briefs on at the moment.  From small team building projects to large ski trips on a budget it’s been hard but fun using creative ways to solve issues like small budgets.  Corporate events at home and abroad are great for motivating staff, rewarding people and inspiring change and development in the workplace which is why they are still in demand even when resources are low.

For the summer we are working on a variety of briefs including a surf and golf trip in Biarritz, team building in Chamonix, meetings and conferences in London which is a new location for Ten80, plus some great trips in Ibiza including an incentive event onboard a Turkish gullet.  We are also getting some enquiries for ski trips and conferences this winter.  One of the conferences next year will be in the south of France to get away from the cold which will be a nice change.  It seems we’ll be doing a bit of globe trotting over the next few months.

Walks in the valley

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

With no gear in Chamonix I have been generally sticking to hikes and walks around the valley.  By no means is this bad thing there are loads of spectacular walks; from leisurely strolls to proper mountain hikes perfect for all levels of fitness and adventure.  You can walk to and along glaciers, mountain lakes and refuges with great views over the valley.  There are lot’s of lifts and trains leading to different sections of the mountains which is great for seeing different areas of Chamonix.

For serious hikers this is the perfect place with some of the best walks in Europe such as the Mont Blanc summit, which Ten80 offer as a charitable corporate event.  Unfortunately I’m not quite fit enough for that yet so we’re planning a walk around from the Aiguile du Midi across to the Mer de Glace soon.  This weekend we enjoyed a walk from town over to Flegere and up to Lac Blanc which was just beautiful if a little cold- we bought a hot chocolate for the index lift as it had snowed last week higher in the mountains.  The walk wasn’t strenuous we saw people of all ages along the way and it we soon warmed up once we got walking.  All this walking  means you work up an appetite for the great mountain resturants Chamonix has to offer, such as the Hotel Montenvers overlooking the Mer de Glace, the perfect antidote to a days walking.

What’s happening in Chamonix?

Monday, July 27th, 2009

This week sees the first Boulder Film Festival in Chamonix; 10 adventure films have been selected for the two day event at the congress centre in town.  Perfect timing as the town will have recovered from the wall climbing competition that finished in style on Monday night with spectacular fireworks.  If golf’s more your thing then Pro-am Golf tournament will be teeing off this week too in Le Praz.  Of course there are always the great markets to visit, one of my favourite places to visit is the Mont Blanc market; with antiques, clothes, and loads of food stalls it’s a great chance immerse yourself in French culture and French food.

If you’re looking for evening entertainment Hotel Mountenvers are holding summer soirées overlooking the Mer de Glace with live music and four course meals every Thursday evenings.  There are lots of BBQ’s in the bars in town including Le Jekyll and Le Vert.  There is still so many good drink offers you’d think you were celebrating après style.  Everyday the Vagabond have beer for a lip smacking €1.50 between 4.30 and 6.30, La Terrace has there usual pitcher offers everyday, Monkey’s happy 15 minutes is always popular as the beer is €1.  MBC of course still have their Chicken wing Monday nights which is always worth the short walk out of town.  It’s a great time to see a Ten80 Chamonix and try out the valley in the summer.

Jeremy Clarkson on a Ten80 Event
– well, not quite, but YOU can be with Ice Driving in the Alps

Sunday’s Top Gear broadcast saw all three presenters – Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James Mayes – take to the Ice Driving Circuit in Val Thorens. Over the years, we at Ten80 Events have organised ice race days, just like the one the boys enjoyed, at a variety of circuits within some of the best ski resorts in the Alps.

On that day, filmed earlier this year in March, they drove Andros Trophee cars, usually piloted by the likes of Alain Prost, on this occasion co-piloted by professional drivers giving them some tips. Following this, as broadcast last night, they raced in their own cars.

Biarritz Surf Events

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I may have declared myself an unbiased source about yoga but I’m afraid, with Biarritz, I cannot do the same.  Again I have never been, but man would I love to.  Tim and Al are filled with great stories from Ten80 events in this southern French town.  It seems to tick a lot of boxes as a destination.  Gorgeous town, stunning beaches, great restaurants, and fabulous hotels.  Not only this, but the surf is to die for.  I have surfed only once before and I stood up a little, no where near good, but I feel like I have the bug.  It could also be the allure of surfer guys and sun, but no matter how I look at it I would love to visit this town.

I have looked into surf lessons for a corporate event, what a great way to reward staff and team build.  If you’re after a conference with a difference then you should think of Biarritz; it’s got great conference facilities and if surfing is not the perfect antidote to a meeting maybe a cold beer whilst watching other people try to surf in one of the many great bars should do the trick.
