Fantastic Snow Conditions – what about global warming ?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Two years ago, in fact two winter seasons ago, Chamonix like much of the Alps did not have a very good winter, in that not much snow fell.  That is not actually completely true – the snow fell late here in Chamonix and those out for Xmas and new year week had a limited and generally disappointing time.  The ski areas in Chamonix, particularly Les Grands Montets and Aiguille du Midi, are so high up, you are virtually guaranteed snow and skiing up until May.

Because of this disappointing start to the season, the British media, particularly the tabloids, announced the death of skiing in Europe and that in 20 years time, skiing will cease in the Alps in all bar the highest resorts.  As a result  of this panic reporting, aka trying to find a story,  many chalet and hotel companies suffered a drop in business the following winter.

And what happened that following winter ?  Great snowfalls and consistently good skiing throughout the season.  We are now experiencing an even better winter with loads of snow on to what is a great base, given early dumps in November and early December.

We at Ten80 Events do not claim to know much about global warming and certainly are not dismissing the damaging effects human beings and our technological developments are having on the planet.  We do however know scaremongering and how the British tabloid press operate and once again that age old lesson about not believing everything you read.

Bon ski !

Ten80 Events Corporate Event News January 2009

Now that Christmas and New Year are well and truly out of the way, its back to work.  We are now in brand new offices, based on the edge of Chamonix centre in beautiful snowy surroundings and a cracking view of Mont Blanc.  Fiona Jennison has joined us for the winter again and is beavering away, busily preparing for the arrival of Vitol.  Their corporate event is a combination of team building for the Geneva based staff and client entertaining at the weekends, primarily the various bankers they work with.  Fiona is our girl friday in the winter and is very involved in the Vitol event which lasts 3 weeks.  In the summer, she works for us in Ibiza and also skippers her catamaran, taking our clients out on fantastic sailing trips around the island and out to Formentera.

Before Vitol though, we have Time Warner arriving for their annual ski trip, which we also thoroughly enjoy.  This is a Cartoon Network branded trip where the client entertains his favourite clients – TV media buyers which always makes for a boozy and lively time.

We look forward to receiving both these clients and getting out skiing with them but before we do, its necessary to get back to the admin and pre-arrival work that ensures a seamless, memorable trip.
